Gifted, IEP, or 504: Understanding the Difference

Gifted & Talented, Special Education/IEP, and Section 504 serve different purposes. Families often hear the labels before they understand the pathway.

Gifted & Talented focuses on advanced challenge, depth, complexity, enrichment, or acceleration when a student needs more than the standard curriculum.

Special Education / IEP is for students who may qualify for specially designed instruction, individualized goals, related services, and supports through special education.

Section 504 focuses on accommodations and access supports so a student with a disability or health-related need can participate fully in school.

Some children need one pathway. Some need more than one over time. The Mocher™ helps parents understand the difference and prepare for the conversation.
